Money Management
After handicapping, the most important (and probably most overlooked) element to sports investing is money management. The “Million Dollar” question: “How do we maximize our gains and minimize our losses?”

  FAQ

What type of “system” or methodology do you use when making sports investment decisions?

SAC does not rely on any one particular “system” when making sports investment decisions. We feel in order to make consistent selections (over the long-term) a multi-faceted approach to handicapping is necessary. In almost all cases, this involves a balanced mixture of analyzing data from a technical perspective and utilizing our keen understanding of situational match-ups. Our “in-house” research tools and proprietary platforms allow us to set our own lines and compare them against the Vegas number for any sport. The in-depth level of research and man-hours SAC spends dissecting each sport (and the teams within that sport) insures that we have the most current information and knowledge necessary to make informed decisions on a daily basis. However, the process does not stop here. As mentioned, we analyze EVERY money line, spread and total the odds makers set for EVERY major sport (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL NCAAF and NCAAB). Simply knowing the “ins and outs” of each team and sport is not enough. We also need to understand the odds maker’s reason and purpose for the line that is released and any subsequent moves made thereafter. When these procedures are performed on a regular basis it becomes relatively “easier” (again, over the long-term) to beat the spread on a consistent basis. SAC’s discipline and handicapping acumen allows us to determine where line and/or side value exists; thereby, assisting our clients in making the most appropriate and informed sports investment decisions possible.

What sports do The Sports Asylum Consultants, LLC handicap?

SAC handicaps the six major North American sports: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NCAAF, and NCAAB.  Other firms may focus only on one or two sports and scoff at those who handicap multiple sports. It is SAC’s opinion that in order to uncover valuable sports investments a larger pool of opportunities is required. This further stresses our goal of diversifying risk and decreasing volatility. Growing our profits over the long term is SAC’s primary objective. Ignoring sports (e.g. MLB and NHL) that offer valuable opportunities would undermine SAC’s core strategies of investing. Furthermore, we are documented by The Sports Monitor of Oklahoma (TSM) for all regular season selections as well as the respective post seasons (play-offs, bowl games and tournaments) for each sport. Selections will be posted daily for any of the six sports currently “in season.” On the occasion a selection is not available for a particular day, the scrolling banner on the home page will notify our prospective and current clients of such situation.

Do The Sports Asylum Consultants, LLC post selections daily? If so, how many can selections can I expect?

We are often asked how many plays are released on a daily basis. Understandably, this is a difficult question to answer. The current, “in season” sports have a lot to do with dictating the most appropriate response. We review every day’s available match-ups for opportunities we deem to be favorable investments. Some days we may like them all and on other days, possibly none. Having said this, volume investing does help us diversify risk and grow profits consistently over time. To say specifically which daily, star-rated plays will ‘absolutely win’ would be irresponsible. Therefore, spreading our risk over more plays using similar units spreads out the risk and increases the probability of long-term, consistent profits. During seasons other than NFL and NCAAF, a client can reasonably expect 4 - 6 selections on a daily basis and often times several more if favorable win probabilities or side values can be generated. As our subscriptions are not priced on a “per play” basis, the value received compared to other firms, we feel, is enormous. SAC is singularly focused on sports investment opportunities; therefore, every play we post, we invest in as well. SAC does not offer individual game packages. We want our clients to invest with a purpose over a longer period of time to truly benefit from and experience consistent results. This philosophy lends itself to investing for the right reasons rather than simply posting daily selections in an effort to generate “per play” sales.

If SAC does not release any selections whatsoever for a particular day, the scrolling banner on the home page will notify our prospective and current clients of such situation.

When are your selections released and posted to the website?

Monday – Friday (Weeknight Games): No later than 6:00 pm ET

All selections for sporting events played on a weeknight will be posted prior to 6:00 pm Eastern time. Most weeknight games are in sports in which a new line is set daily (e.g. MLB, NBA, and NHL). Our release time allows for the monitoring of current match-ups, injuries, weather conditions, line movements, etc. However, in most cases SAC’s selections will be posted much earlier in the afternoon to allow our clients ample time to shop for the best possible line. When an early morning selection is posted, an analysis of each selection will be included after the initial release is submitted. These are releases in which SAC feels the line will move quickly; therefore, we will encourage our clients to take immediate advantage of the current side and/or line value recommended and subsequently provide our analysis shortly thereafter.

Monday – Friday (Weekday Games): No later than 45 mins prior to the start

All selections for sporting events being played during a weekday (games starting before 6 pm ET) will be released no later than 45 minutes prior to the start of the game. These will typically include selections made on MLB games or during NCAA March Madness tournaments. Again, selections will most likely be posted much earlier (or, in some cases the night before) for the event(s) in question.

Saturday and Sunday: No later than 12:00 pm ET

Most selections will be released prior to 12:00 pm Eastern Time on Saturdays and Sundays. During Football season, some plays may be released during the week before the scheduled event. These early plays are posted to capitalize on favorable side and/or line value(s). In the case of steam plays during NCAAF/ NCAAB or where late information has been procured, selections will be posted no later than 6:00 pm Eastern Time on Saturdays.

SAC caters to the long-term sports investor. Thus, value is inherently received in purchasing longer term subscriptions. We believe in our process and the overall discipline we use to deliver long-term positive results. However, we cannot (and will not) guarantee success over any given period of time; therefore, maintaining a longer subscription helps our clients navigate through the “ups and downs” and allows them a greater chance at benefiting from SAC’s diligence and consistency. Again, the advantages gained from investing in larger volumes over a longer period of time helps us reduce the volatility of the short term. If we incorporate patience and a game plan when investing, the likelihood of “purely emotional” decisions distracting our clients from the bigger picture will be severely reduced.

In order to purchase any subscription, prospective clients will be required to sign up for a free username and password. SAC logs this information in our database to track and provide security and the highest level of customer service to our clients. Please review our Privacy Policy to learn more regarding the safe guarding measures that have been implemented to protect the identity and personal information of our clients.

SAC adheres to a strict “NO REFUND POLICY”. Please review our Terms and Conditions of Use before agreeing to purchase any subscription. Our clients are extremely important to us and we appreciate your understanding of this arrangement.

What does your “star” rating mean to me as an investor?

SAC uses a simple 2, 3, 4 and 5 star rating systems…with 1 star selections representing “Opinion Only” recommendations; these will be displayed in our “Free Pick” section. A 1 star recommendation is not a graded selection (meaning it will not be tracked by TSM), but still receives the same level of research and analysis given to our other star-rated investment plays.

Each star represents SAC’s unit play on a particular game. For SAC’s tracking purposes, we quantify units in $100 increments. Thus two stars (2*) would translate into a $200 investment and five stars (5*) would equal a $500 investment. Generally, money line sports (MLB and NHL) will be presented as 2* or 3* plays with higher unit selections reserved for Game of the Month/Year selections. Spread sports and lower volume sports seasons (NFL and NCAAF) will generally be displayed as 3* and 4* selections with 5* reserved for “Top Plays” (e.g. Game of the Week, Total of the Week, etc.).

SAC does not believe in radically altering its unit recommendations (e.g. 100* Monster Locks, 200* Lock of the Decade, etc.). Other firms may widely adjust their unit plays in an effort to “play catch-up” during losing streaks or aggressively capitalize on winning stretches. SAC’s consistent approach and money management strategies (see Money Management) are built around long-term investment principles; therefore, our star-rated recommendations will only fluctuate in an extremely narrow range. The star-rated investments will represent the recommended investment percentage of your IC, per selection.

Are SAC’s selections guaranteed?

No. As with any medium of investing, positive returns cannot (and should not) be guaranteed. In the financial markets (stocks and bonds) arena the following (or, similar to) disclaimer is standard language: “Past performance is no indication or guarantee of future performance or success”. The same is true for sports investments as principal loss is an inherent risk to any form of investing.

When a member purchases a subscription to SAC, not only do they receive the most consistent and accurate sports investment advice available they also receive the peace of mind that they are partnering with a firm who holds the highest regard for honesty and credibility. Guaranteeing results or implying that a particular selection will not lose would go against SAC’s philosophy of integrity. Wins and losses are a part of “the game”. Any prudent investor would also avoid a stock broker who claims that their stock picks were “guaranteed” to go up in value. Losing days, weeks and even months happen…we hate them too! However, through our hard work, focus and discipline, we know that the winning days, weeks and months will occur more frequently over time.

Is a written analysis or commentary provided with each selection?

It is a common practice by reputable firms to provide a written analysis for each recommended play…and you as an investor should expect this information.

SAC does provide a written commentary for each selection. Our write ups are intended to give a glimpse into SAC’s reasoning for each play. Obviously, every angle and deciding factor will not be displayed as they can be far too numerous on any given situation; however, you should avoid firms who provide “blind plays” without any form of written analysis. Having said this, it can be argued that roughly 50% of every successful or unsuccessful play is dependent on “luck.” One of SAC’s goals is to understand the most pivotal angles so that a higher percentage of the “lucking bounces” fall our way. After all, that is one of the primary reasons to handicap any given sport, right? None-the-less, the most eloquent or flowing write ups do little to sway the outcome; rather they are simply a way for the handicapping firm to display their complete understanding of the current situation and probabilities. The style of our write ups are weighted towards situational match-up analysis while focusing only on the stats or trends we deem beneficial to the current situation. While the length of commentary may vary from sport to sport or game to game, each posted selection has been fully researched and meets our criteria (e.g. side value, line value or 55%+ simulation success, etc.) for investment.

What is a “scamdicapper”?

The word “scamdicapper” is an industry specific term used to describe a con-artist who operates their scam by pretending to be a reputable handicapper. Their schemes while not overly elaborate are designed to steal your money in various ways.  They attempt to grab the attention of the uneducated investor by making false and outrageous claims of astronomical win percentages. They also use terms such as “lock”, “guaranteed” and “bail out”. To be specific, they are not looking out for the best interest (or for that matter, any interest) of the client, but rather themselves. Their sales pitch sounds most appealing to the desperate investor who is in the midst of a losing streak and has not adhered to any form of discipline or money management principles. The lure of paying a couple of hundred bucks for a “guaranteed” winner sounds like nothing compared to the hole that has already been created. After all, it is “guaranteed”, right?

Scamdicappers use a variety of sales tactics and advertising platforms. It is SAC’s recommendation, for you as an investor, to do further research to learn more about the types of scams currently out there (e.g. playing both sides of the same game). Regardless of the method, in each case the goal is the same: to acquire your personal contact information. A variety of methods are used get your information….whether it’s through you signing up to receive free picks via email or by calling a 1-800 hotline number . Once they get your information and make the determination that you are a target, the onslaught of unrelenting harassment and high pressure sales tactics commences.

Spotting a scamdicapper is as simple as asking them if their picks are documented by an independent third party, then asking for a copy of their records. If they are actually able to produce something for your review, verify it with the monitoring service. Scamdicappers have been known to run their own fake monitoring operations as a way to substantiate their own falsified records. Beware of the “no-name” documenting firms. FYI, the most well known and respected independent third party monitoring firm for the sports handicapping industry is The Sports Monitor of Oklahoma (TSM). SAC is documented by TSM.

Are you selections monitored/ documented by an independent third party service?

Yes. Every SAC graded selection is monitored by The Sports Monitor of Oklahoma (TSM). Graded selections are any 2*, 3*, 4* and 5* play. SAC’s 1* selections are “Opinion Only” plays and will be displayed in our “Free Pick” section; however, they are not included in our graded records.
